The man who changed the world

In class we saw a set of videos describing what was occurring in Iran in the late 70s. This time is crucial in understanding because during this time things occurred that would ill relations between the US and Iran to today. The documentaries were extremely interesting in that we learn the history and the politics and speak to the important people involved. Visuals I find are extremely important in order to really understand what occurred. In these videos we hear from other Iranian religious figures commenting on Khomeini, the man who changed the world; how the students overtook the embassy; U.S. politicians specifically Carter. We these first hand accounts we can understand the atmosphere surrounding that time, in Iran and the U.S and see the reaction on events such as the when the Shah was accepted into the US and when the students overtook the embassy. With these videos we see the steps in which Khomeini came into power and how the Revolution of 1979 occurred.

  1. I agree that the videos are more effective that class lectures and readings. I had watched the video before i had done the textbook reading and i found that it was easier to gather the details from the text better having watched the video. this specific documentary, i thought was effective because of the live footage it was comprised of. It was able to help me get a full visual of the impact of this revolution on Iran as well as America. I know Jimmy Carter wasn't necessarily the best president who ever lived but i kind of felt bad for him in this film, yet i didn't feel like i totally opposed the ideals of Khomeini either.

  2. I like the videos and I think that they put a different spin on an idea. Its more informative for me to see images rather than hearing what he looked like. I also like that I am able to access these movies myself at home.

  4. I agree with everyone here. I believe that videos/documentaries like To Die in Jerusalem and The Man who Changed the World make it alot easier for the viewer to gather information regarding the historical event as well as gives one the opportunity to sympathize with the historical figures involved.
